the environment in international video art

Curated by Maria Livia Brunelli and Silvia Cirelli

FONDAZIONE SANDRETTO RE REBAUDENGO, TURIN
October 11, 2009 - from 12 am to 8 pm
Collateral event of FESTIVAL CINEMAMBIENTE 2009, TURIN

The exhibition "Crossing Landscapes. The environment in international video art" is conceived as a
collateral event of the 12th edition of Cinemambiente Festival (October 8-13,2009). The festival,
founded in 1998 in Turin, has not only been a pioneering event among environment-related
festivals, but has also managed to grow over the years promoting environmental culture through
films, documentaries, cartoons, surveys, debates and discussions.

This year Cinemambiente is enriched by an exhibition of video artworks hosted in the lecture hall
of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, lasting an entire day. This event is aimed at giving the
chance to some of the most prominent international artists that in their videos address
environmental issues to extend their visibility to the audience of the festival.

Environment-related issues are taken in great consideration by international contemporary artists.
The two curators of this event, Maria Livia Brunelli and Silvia Cirelli, work between East and West,
and have selected six artists from different geographical areas: Italy, Spain/Brazil, China,
Austria/USA and Ecuador. All these artists deal with the difficult relationship between man and
nature in a highly responsive way.

The show opens with the screening of a series of public construction works started and never
completed, shot in Italy during different occasions by the artistic collective Alterazioni Video.
This piece is followed by a short experimental film by ZimmerFrei. The film, shot on a wild beach
located in Sardinia, is centered on the vain attempt of mankind to leave remarkable traces in a
landscape dominated by natural elements. The video of Spanish artist Sara Ramo is characterized
by an intimate yet surrealist atmosphere. The artist’s aim is to create a forest on the clothes-line of
a curious bathroom. Austrian artist Rainer Ganahl is the author of a sarcastic video, ending in a
rather unsettling way. The video documents a bike ride whose protagonist is the artist himself
playing the role of dramatist Alfred Jarry. The last pieces on show are the works by Chinese artist
Ma Yongfeng
and by South American artist Maria Rosa Jijon. The former presents a video
about the relationship between man and nature, based on the reproduction  of a mountain village
assembled by the artist himself.
The latter shows a piece about the massive engineering project
conceived to connect Ecuador to Brazil and that could lead to the destruction of entire areas of the
Amazon Rainforest.
